Magpie's obsession with Sofia's "fame" reveals her longing for connection, a recurring theme in the show. Their first meeting creates a tense relationship, as Magpie's persistent attempts to bond with Sofia eventually drive her to frustration.

Unlike her typical portrayal in DC Comics, where Magpie (originally named Margaret Pye) is a supervillain and former museum curator turned jewel thief, this version of Magpie in The Penguin Season 4 is reimagined as a lonely inmate who feels envious of Sofia's media attention and wants to connect with her.

Who is Magpie in the Penguin Series?

Magpie, whose real name is Margaret "Mag" Pye, is a supervillain from DC Comics, created by John Byrne. She first appeared in The Man of Steel #3 in November 1986.

The character has been portrayed in live-action by Sarah Schenkkan in the final season of Gotham, Rachel Matthews in the first season of the Arrowverse series Batwoman, and Marié Botha in the upcoming miniseries The Penguin.

Penguin Series Release Date

The Penguin premiered in the U.S. on HBO on September 19, 2024, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, with multiple re-airings through September 22. The next seven episodes will air every Sunday night at the same time from September 29 to November 10, 2024. The series is also available for streaming on Max.

Originally, it was supposed to premiere in mid-2024 but was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes.

In May 2024, before its release, Sky Group acquired the broadcast rights for selected European countries where Max wasn’t available. The show started airing on Sky Atlantic and Sky's streaming service Now on September 20.

In June 2024, HBO and Max's content CEO, Casey Bloys, said that The Penguin was a great fit for HBO Originals but couldn't be changed to that label because they had already started licensing it internationally under the Max brand. The following month, the series was moved to debut on HBO after the branding was renegotiated.
