Jerod Mayo Career
Jerod Mayo was a top linebacker in the 2008 NFL Draft and was picked 10th overall by the New England Patriots. He signed a five-year contract worth $18.9 million and was the only rookie to start in Week 1. Mayo quickly made an impact, winning Defensive Rookie of the Month in October 2008 and finishing the season with 128 tackles. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in a near-unanimous vote. Despite a knee injury in 2009, Mayo returned to play and finished that season with 103 tackles.
In 2010, Jerod Mayo became a defensive captain and led the NFL with 175 tackles that season, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. He signed a five-year contract extension with the Patriots in 2011 and helped the team reach the Super Bowl, where they lost to the New York Giants. Despite missing some games due to injury, Mayo continued to perform well, making over 100 tackles and being voted a team co-captain. In 2012, he was fined for a late hit and made the Pro Bowl again. Unfortunately, in 2013, Mayo's season ended early due to a torn pectoral muscle.
In 2014, Jerod Mayo suffered a knee injury and was placed on injured reserve, missing the rest of the season. The Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX without him. In 2016, after another injury, Mayo retired from football. He returned to the Patriots in 2019 as their inside linebackers coach. In 2024, Mayo became the Patriots' head coach, making history as their first Black head coach. In his debut game as head coach, Mayo led the team to a 16–10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
