Kristofferson's paternal grandparents came from Sweden, and his grandfather was an officer in the Swedish Army. Like many children in military families, Kristofferson moved around a lot while growing up. He eventually settled in San Mateo, California, where he graduated from San Mateo High School.

In 1965, when Kristofferson finished his time in the Army, he was offered a job teaching English at West Point. Instead, he chose to leave the Army to become a songwriter. His family was upset with his choice and cut ties with him, and they never made up.
