DJ Hernandez had a college football career at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where he played for five seasons. He started as a quarterback and later switched to wide receiver, becoming a team captain for his last two seasons. In 2007, he won UConn's Football Alumni Award for being the "ultimate team player."

After his playing career, DJ became a football coach. He coached at Southington High School in Connecticut, worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami, and served as a quarterbacks coach at Brown and a tight-ends coach at Iowa.
