Who are Menendez Brothers?

The Menendez brothers, Joseph Lyle Menendez (born January 10, 1968) and Erik Galen Menendez (born November 27, 1970), are American brothers who were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. After the murders, they initially claimed unknown intruders were responsible, but their lavish spending raised suspicion. Erik later confessed to the killings during therapy, leading to their arrests.

They were charged with first-degree murder and faced two trials. In their first trial, juries couldn't reach a verdict, resulting in mistrials. In the second trial, they were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As of October 2024, they are serving their sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California.

Lyle once mentioned that their early prison life was very painful, and Erik went on a hunger strike to try to keep them together.

In February 2018, Lyle was transferred to a new housing unit at the same facility where Erik was held, and in April of that year, they were reunited. They were emotional during the reunion, with Lyle saying, "Finally."

Lyle served as president of the inmate government at Mule Creek and has worked in a support group for prisoners who suffered sexual abuse.  As of now, both brothers continue to serve life sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California.
