'Uglies' Ending Explained
The book Uglies ends with Tally showing off her new life as a Pretty. However, before the story finishes, we notice the scar on Tally's palm is still there. This means her mind hasn't been completely changed by the surgery, and a part of the old Tally is still there.
When her friend Paris had the surgery, he forgot everything about life outside the City and was fully brainwashed, only starting to remember his past when he got a new cut on his hand. But Tally already knows the ugly truth about the world, and her scar represents her resistance and a chance to return to her true self after getting the cure.
Will There Be a Sequel?
Netflix's Uglies movie is based on Scott Westerfeld's Uglies book series, which includes Uglies, Pretties, and Specials. The first film mostly followed the original story, although it felt rushed and left out some details. The movie's ending teased the next chapter of Tally's journey as she becomes a "Pretty," leaving room for a sequel. If the sequel happens, it would focus on Tally's fight against the brain-altering "Pretty" surgery.
However, adapting the third book, Specials, would be more difficult because the movie made changes to the way "Special Circumstances" work. These changes could make it harder for the third film to stay true to the original story. So, while it would be exciting to see all three books turned into movies, keeping future sequels faithful to the books might be challenging.
Uglies
"Uglies," now streaming on Netflix, is set in a future where everyone undergoes surgery at 16 to become "pretties," with perfect looks, abilities, and personalities. The story follows Tally Youngblood, played by Joey King, as she learns that the operation, while presented as a gift, is not really optional and hides darker truths.
The movie is based on Scott Westerfeld's 2005 novel and hints at potential sequels, as the book is part of a trilogy. Director McG is hopeful for more movies, saying his plans for future installments are well-prepared.
