In the ending of Slingshot, John (played by Casey Affleck) discovers that much of what he experienced aboard the Odyssey 1 spacecraft was actually a series of hallucinations. Eventually, John learns a shocking truth: he is the only real person on the mission, and his comrades were hallucinations brought on by the effects of the drugs used in their hibernation cycles.

Even more surprising, Zoe reveals through a radio transmission that John isn't in space at all, but rather in an underground facility on Earth where the company is testing his ability to endure long-term hibernation before a real mission.

John, now believing he's in a simulation, attempts to escape by following Zoe’s advice to exit through the airlock. At first, it seems like he was right—he finds himself in an underground location. However, in a final twist, he realizes that he is still hallucinating and is actually in space.

As he tries to climb a ladder toward a red light, he gets sucked out into the void of space, confirming that his escape attempt was futile and he was on a doomed mission all along. This ending leaves the audience questioning John's reality and whether he truly understood what was happening before his tragic fate.
