Sayuri Cause of Death
Japanese singer-songwriter Sayuri, known for her work on anime like My Hero Academia and Erased, has died at the age of 28. Her husband, Amaarashi, confirmed the news on Friday, September 27.
In a letter posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, he shared that Sayuri passed away on September 20. Sayuri made many contributions to anime music, but sadly, she is no longer with us.
What Happened to Sayuri?
In the announcement, Sayuri's husband said that she had a small, private funeral with only close family and friends, following her wishes.
The family also asked the media to be respectful of their grief and not to interview people close to Sayuri. Sayuri was especially known for her powerful, trembling voice and her often dark lyrics, which created strong emotions in her listeners.
How did Sayuri Die?
The exact cause of Sayuri's death is not known, but in July 2024, she announced a break from music because of functional dysphonia, a condition that makes the voice sound strained due to tension in the vocal cords. Her husband shared that she remained "passionate about music until the very end" while dealing with a chronic illness.
Sayuri started as an indie musician in 2010 and moved from her hometown of Fukuoka to Tokyo in 2013 to grow her music career. She made her major debut in 2015 at age 18 and gained attention from anime fans that year when her song "Mikazuki" was used as the ending theme for Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace. She went on to perform songs for anime like Erased ("Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna"), Scum's Wish ("Parallel Line"), My Hero Academia Season 4 ("Koukai no Uta"), Edens Zero ("Sekai no Himitsu"), and Lycoris Recoil ("Hana no Tou").
