Most Consecutive Scoreless Innings by a Team

The record for the Most Consecutive Scoreless Innings by a Team has been created by the Dodgers. They have now gone 33 innings in a row without allowing any runs. In Game 1 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium, pitchers Jack Flaherty, Daniel Hudson, and Ben Casparius kept the Mets from scoring with a three-hit shutout, winning 9-0. This tied the 1966 Orioles' record for the longest streak of scoreless innings in a single postseason. Below we have listed the Most Scoreless Innings in a Row, take a look.

“They just went out there and dominated,” said Dodgers catcher Will Smith. “I'm back there calling the pitches, but it's all those guys executing what we're deciding. We’re just trying to keep it going.”

“It's been just picking up where the last guy left off,” Flaherty said. “You know that the guy coming in after you has got your back. And that's why this whole team has felt like everybody is just feeding off of each other right now.”

The 2024 Dodgers began their scoreless streak after giving up six runs to the Padres in the second inning of Game 3 of the NLDS in San Diego. Although the Dodgers lost that game, they didn't allow any more runs over the last six innings. They then continued the streak with back-to-back shutout wins in Games 4 and 5, advancing to the NLCS.

In the fifth inning of the NLCS, Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty got some help from the defense and a mistake by Mets hitter Jesse Winker. After Winker singled and Jose Iglesias hit another single, Winker made a wide turn at second base. Dodgers outfielder Kiké Hernández threw behind him to second base, causing Winker to hesitate too long before heading to third, leading to the first out of the inning. This helped the Dodgers keep their scoreless streak alive, long enough to set a National League record.

“It changes the outlook of maybe the way that inning goes, getting that out there,” Flaherty said. “It was huge.”

“The game was still in the balance, and they started to kind of build an inning,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Just a heady baseball play. That right there, I thought, took the wind out of [the Mets’] sail.”

Not only was the Dodgers' scoreless streak impressive, but they also had a streak within that streak. Before Francisco Lindor drew a walk in the fourth inning, giving the Mets their first baserunner, Dodgers pitchers had retired 28 consecutive batters dating back to Game 5 of the NLDS. According to Elias, this ranks as the third-longest such streak in a single postseason.

The most consecutive scoreless innings pitched by a team has been given below.

  • 1905 Giants: 28 innings.

Most Consecutive Scoreless Innings Postseason

What is the record for most consecutive scoreless innings? The 1966 Orioles, led by a young Jim Palmer, went 33 innings without giving up a run during their World Series sweep against the Dodgers, finishing with three straight shutouts. Now, these 2024 Dodgers have accomplished a similar feat, winning three consecutive shutouts themselves. They began with Games 4 and 5 of the NLDS against the Padres and continued their streak in Game 1 of the NLCS against the Mets.

When center fielder Kiké Hernández made a sharp defensive play to help pitcher Jack Flaherty finish the fifth inning without allowing a run, the Dodgers reached 29 straight scoreless innings. This broke a 119-year-old National League postseason record set by the 1905 New York Giants. Only the 1966 Orioles, the 1905 Giants, and the 1924 Dodgers have achieved three straight postseason shutouts.

When Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández reached over the wall to make a catch that ended the sixth inning, the Dodgers extended their scoreless streak to 30 innings, leaving only the 1966 Orioles with a longer streak of shutout baseball. By the end of the game, the Dodgers had tied that historic record.

The two longer streaks both belong to the Yankees. The 2004 Yankees retired 29 straight batters between ALDS Game 4 against the Twins and ALCS Game 1 against the Red Sox. The 1956 Yankees retired 31 Brooklyn Dodgers in a row during the World Series, a stretch that included Don Larsen’s perfect game in Game 5.

Only three other teams in postseason history can claim similar "hidden perfect games," where they retired 27 consecutive batters. These were the 1939 Reds, 1927 Yankees, and 1926 Cardinals, all in World Series games.

“The game has certainly changed, and I think that from our perspective, it's just a collective effort,” said Roberts. “Certainly the players that were involved in all those scoreless innings have been fantastic, and I think defensively, we've been very good at converting outs when we need to. I think the coaches have done a great job of relaying the information and making it tangible and allowing for our pitchers and catchers to do a great job of sequencing, catching the ball the right way. And the front office, just the information we get.

“I just think that how we're preventing runs, it's a complete team effort.”

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. They play in Major League Baseball (MLB) as part of the National League (NL) West Division. The team was founded in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, and joined the NL in 1890 under the name Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Over the years, the team went through several name changes before becoming the Dodgers in 1932.

During the 1940s and 1950s, the Dodgers developed a strong rivalry with the New York Yankees, meeting in the World Series seven times. After losing the first five matchups, the Dodgers won their first championship in 1955. They also made history by signing Jackie Robinson in 1947, breaking the color barrier in MLB. In 1956, Don Newcombe became the first player to win both the Cy Young Award and the National League MVP in the same season.
