After searching again in early 2023, she found old newspaper articles and went to the Oakland police, who reopened the missing persons case.

On June 20, 2023, investigators confirmed to Alida and her mother that Luis had been located on the east coast. Luis visited Oakland later that month to reunite with his family, including his brother Roger, who he had not seen in decades. Luis returned to the east coast but came back for a visit in July.
