They met in June 1989 when Smyth, who owned a tape-duplicating business, proposed recording Oziel discussing psychology. Their affair began, and after Erik Menendez confessed to Oziel about the murder of his parents, Smyth moved in with him. When they broke up in March 1990, she informed the police about recordings of the brothers’ confessions.
Initially, Smyth worked with prosecutors but later became disillusioned when they didn’t pursue charges against Oziel, whom she accused of raping and drugging her. During her testimony, Smyth described feeling brainwashed and traumatized, suffering from PTSD. She compared herself to a prisoner of war and shared troubling details about her relationship with Oziel. Despite her accusations, he denied any wrongdoing, and prosecutors believed a case against him would be weak.

However, the brothers' extravagant spending following the murders raised suspicions, leading to their arrest. They were convicted in 1996 and are now serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
