Rebecca Cheptegei was born on the Kenyan side of the Kenya–Uganda border on 22 February 1991 to Joseph and Agnes Cheptegei. She was the second of 13 siblings. Her family’s ancestral village was Bukwo in Uganda, but she later moved to Chepkum in Kenya to be closer to athletic training centers.
Rebecca had two children and was previously in a relationship with Dickson Ndiema Marangach. She also served in the Uganda People's Defence Force, where she rose to the rank of sergeant.

Joshua Cheptegei is a Ugandan long-distance runner, born on 12 September 1996. He holds world records in the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters, and the best time for 15 kilometers. Cheptegei is the current Olympic champion in the 10,000 meters and has won three World Championship titles in the same event.
He also earned gold medals in both the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2019 World Cross Country Championships. In 2024, he set a new Olympic record while winning the 10,000 meters.
