In the beginning, Jack has a tense relationship with Tim, his ex-son-in-law, due to Tim's past issues with alcohol, drugs, and his messy divorce from Marion. Tim also neglected Amy and Lou when they were kids, which made things worse. Jack often argues with Tim about how to run the ranch.

At first, Jack doesn't trust Ty, the new ranch hand, but over time, he comes to see him as a son. He eventually approves of Ty marrying Amy.

Jack is stubborn and resistant to change, which sometimes causes problems, especially with his girlfriend Lisa and his granddaughter Lou. Jack and Lisa secretly get married at the end of season 7. Jack has a heart attack but is saved by Tim. He loves and spoils his great-granddaughters, Katie, Georgie, and Lyndy.
