Pamela Anderson, famous for her role on Baywatch, shared that she got hepatitis C from a tattoo needle she used with her ex-husband, Tommy Lee. In a 2002 interview with Jane magazine, she explained how this happened.
While hepatitis C can sometimes be spread through sexual contact, the main way people get it today is through blood-to-blood contact. This includes sharing needles for tattoos or drug use. In November 2015, Anderson told People magazine that she received treatment for hepatitis C and is now cured.
What Kind of Hepatitis Does Pamela Anderson Have?
Pamela Anderson thought her hepatitis C diagnosis was a death sentence. She was told she would die in ten years, which made her feel different about her life. Hepatitis C is a chronic liver infection that affects about 3.5 million Americans, leading to around 15,000 deaths each year, according to the CDC.
Anderson lived with the virus for over 15 years but recently found out she is cured after a 12-week treatment with a drug called Sovaldi. She said, “Twelve weeks and gone, yes. I feel like I got back 20 years of my life.” The treatment cost about $100,000, but her health insurance covered it. Now that she’s healthy again, Anderson is focusing on projects like her cooking show and a vegan shoe line.
However, not everyone is as fortunate. Shima Andre, a 42-year-old woman in California with hepatitis C, has health insurance but was denied coverage for a different version of the drug called Harvoni. Her insurance company said her disease wasn’t advanced enough for approval.
She was told she needed more liver damage before they would pay for the treatment. While Anderson had no out-of-pocket costs, Andre was expected to pay almost $100,000 herself for the same treatment. This raises the question of why different patients pay different amounts for the same medication.
