Greg Olsen grew up in Wayne, New Jersey, and attended Wayne Hills High School, where he played football and basketball, coached by his father, Chris Olsen Sr. In his senior year, he was one of three finalists for the Gatorade Player of the Year award, along with his Miami teammate Kyle Wright.

He was named a first-team All-American by USA Today in 2002. During his high school career, he made 73 catches for 1,474 yards and set a school record with 27 touchdowns. He also played in the 2003 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
