He started his college hockey career with the Boston College Eagles in 2011 and was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011 (104th overall). Known as "Johnny Hockey," he won the Hobey Baker Award in 2014 for being the best player in college hockey.

In his first full NHL season (2014-15), he was chosen for the NHL All-Star Game and made the All-Rookie team. He was also a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the best rookie. Gaudreau won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2016-17 for being the most gentlemanly player in the league.
