In 1971, Eric’s parents divorced, and he lived with his father after the separation. His father passed away from cancer in 1977. Meanwhile, his sisters, Julia and Lisa, moved in with their mother, who later remarried an abusive man named Michael Motes. Eric's mother divorced Motes in 1983, citing cruelty. Eric's family faced many challenges, including his mother's difficult marriage and the tragic death of his sister Nancy in 2014.

Eric was estranged from his sister, Julia Roberts, for several years due to his past drug abuse and family conflicts. They reconciled in 2004 when Eric visited her in the hospital after she gave birth to twins.

Eric Roberts began his acting career in 1974 on the soap opera How to Survive a Marriage and later played Ted Bancroft on Another World in 1977. He received Golden Globe nominations for King of the Gypsies and Star 80, and was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Runaway Train.
