After graduating from Cornell University, Bill Nye worked as an engineer for Boeing, where he invented a device used on 747 airplanes. He applied to be an astronaut with NASA four times but was not selected. In 1978, Nye won a Steve Martin lookalike contest and began doing stand-up comedy while still working at Boeing.
