After graduating from Cornell University, Bill Nye worked as an engineer for Boeing, where he invented a device used on 747 airplanes. He applied to be an astronaut with NASA four times but was not selected. In 1978, Nye won a Steve Martin lookalike contest and began doing stand-up comedy while still working at Boeing. He quit his engineering job in 1986 to pursue comedy full-time. Nye gained fame on a Seattle sketch show called Almost Live!, where he showcased fun science experiments.
In 1993, he launched Bill Nye the Science Guy, an educational TV show that made science entertaining for kids and adults.
