I Saw the TV Glow Ending Explained
The film concludes many years later. After that significant night, Owen never saw Maddy again, and he continues to work at the arcade. He looks much older than his age and seems deeply unhappy, both inside and out. When he decides to rewatch The Pink Opaque, he is surprised to find that it’s not the show he remembered. Now that it’s available on streaming, he sees it as cheesy and cheap, quite different from the complex, scary drama he and Maddy once related to. Was it always this way, and did they just have a different perspective? Was Maddy telling the truth? I Saw the TV Glow doesn’t give clear answers or explain its shocking ending.
While Owen is working at a child's birthday party in the arcade with his coworkers, including comedian Conner O'Malley, he suddenly panics while singing "Happy Birthday." He starts screaming for help, but no one pays attention to him. Afterward, he goes to the bathroom to calm down and has a breakdown—or perhaps a breakthrough. In front of the mirror, he cuts into his chest and pulls himself apart to reveal a bright, beautiful light as the music swells. It’s strange and scary, but feels triumphant, as if Owen has finally reached the understanding he sought in The Pink Opaque.
Then the scene cuts to Owen apologizing to the birthday guests for his outburst, suggesting that the previous moment may have been a fantasy. The film ends there.
I Saw the TV Glow
I Saw the TV Glow is a 2024 American psychological horror drama film written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun. It stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as two troubled high school students. Their love for a TV show leads them to question their reality and who they really are. The supporting cast includes Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Conner O'Malley, Emma Portner, Ian Foreman, Fred Durst, and Danielle Deadwyler.
I Saw the TV Glow Plot
In the 1990s, Owen is a shy seventh-grader with a kind mom and a strict dad. He meets Maddy, a ninth-grader, and they connect over her favorite show, The Pink Opaque.
The Pink Opaque is a quirky, late-'90s TV show where two girls at summer camp form a psychic bond to fight monsters from a villain called Mr. Melancholy. The show is inspired by other series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Are You Afraid of the Dark, with a bit of Twin Peaks' oddness thrown in.
Maddy isn't very friendly at first, but she sees something special in Owen and records The Pink Opaque on VHS for him because he can’t watch it when it airs. For both of them, the show is a bright escape from their tough lives. Maddy faces an abusive stepfather, and Owen's mom dies of cancer. His dad barely acknowledges Owen’s interests, saying, “Isn’t that a show for girls?”
When The Pink Opaque gets canceled, Maddy suddenly disappears. Owen is left feeling lost and takes a job at a kid's arcade. One day, Maddy comes back with a shocking story: she says she’s been inside the world of The Pink Opaque and that they are the characters Isabel and Tara. Maddy tells Owen that Mr. Melancholy trapped them in a false reality and asks him to come back with her by being buried alive to “become” Isabel.
At the last moment, Owen hesitates and decides not to go with her, questioning if it’s all just a TV show after all.
