Arthur and the Whistle

At the end of Bone Tomahawk, Arthur uses a bone whistle from the Troglodytes after escaping their cave. He hopes that blowing the whistle will lure any remaining Troglodytes out of hiding, just like it did earlier in the story. After blowing it, he is relieved to find that there are no Troglodytes around, but they hear gunshots coming from the cave. This leaves the audience wondering if Hunt, who stayed behind, killed any returning Troglodytes or perhaps their female captives.

Hunt's Sacrifice

Kurt Russell’s character, Hunt, decides to stay in the cave instead of escaping. He knows he is too injured to survive for long, so he plans to ambush any Troglodytes that return. By staying behind, he sacrifices himself to ensure the safety of the other survivors. This mirrors the tactics of the Troglodytes, who have attacked their victims when they were weakest.

Fate of the Female Troglodytes

The ending reveals a dark twist regarding the female members of the Troglodyte tribe. They are shown to be blinded and have had their limbs amputated. The implication is that the male Troglodytes use them for breeding purposes. This aspect of the story has sparked controversy and criticism, as it reflects a problematic portrayal of Native Americans, despite having a character who distances the Troglodytes from real Indigenous cultures.

Outsmarting the Troglodytes

Throughout the film, the Troglodytes are depicted as physically overpowering. To combat this, Hunt cleverly tricks them into drinking liquor mixed with opium. This causes one Troglodyte to die from an overdose and leaves another unconscious. Hunt's strategy helps the survivors overpower the stronger Troglodytes.

Ambiguity of the Ending

The film ends with a sense of ambiguity, especially regarding Hunt's fate and the fate of the female Troglodytes. The audience is left to wonder whether Hunt was successful in killing the remaining Troglodytes or if he ultimately took his own life. The open-ended conclusion invites viewers to interpret the events in their own way.
